We are students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport at the University of Ljubljana. During the summer holidays of 2023, we were given the opportunity to participate in a project titled: "Measurement and protection of coastal facilities", led by Prof. Dr. Blaž Luin. The core of our project was to develop a strategy for creating a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) for underwater survey and measurement. And also to initiate work related to physical development.

The design process and physical manufacturing are separate and relatively complex disciplines, each presenting a unique set of challenges. These challenges require a structured approach that involves breaking down one complex task into a series of simple steps and processes. On this website, we would like to share our progress with you.

Introduction

Summer excursion at Port Koper

In the framework of the project, we had the opportunity to spend half a day with a team of people from Sirio d.o.o., a company located in the inner part of the port of Koper. We had the opportunity to observe the diverse tasks and operations performed by the company's employees. We were able to board one of the small boats designed by the company and venture out to sea, where we could witness bathymetric surveying in action. Which is a scientific and cartographic technique used to measure and map the depth and topography of underwater terrain.

Equipped with sonar, a precise positioning system, an onboard computer, and specialized software, we monitored real-time data collection and witnessed visualization of the sea floor in a 3D point cloud directly on the boat. Later we proceeded to one of the floating platforms, also designed by Sirio d.o.o. This platform served as the base for a team conducting repair work on a mooring steel pillar submerged 6 meters underwater, enclosed within a special bell to keep them dry while working. The repair consisting of replacing the corroded metal parts of the steel columns was carried out with the utmost professionalism. Later, we were also shown the buoys and other floating structures that the company manufactures and were also introduced to some of the maintenance and manufacturing procedures. It was very interesting to see the range of versatile and highly specialized work the company and its employees conduct.
